The Art Lounge @ Bain: A Passion Project
I’ve just passed my one year anniversary as Executive Director of transform GSO, and if you’ve spent more than five minutes with me in the past year, you probably have heard me drone on about my desire to create an art gallery for artist entrepreneurs in a little used space at our Bain location. I literally started talking about this May of last year.
Funnily enough, I’m not usually the idea person. I’m the logistics person who loves to help other people realize their ideas. Every once in awhile, though, I get a vision of something and just know that’s exactly what needs to happen. That’s what happened when I walked into this particular space. Did I know how to turn this vision into a reality? Ummm – no. Did I personally know anyone that could help me? Nope. So I just started talking about it. To pretty much anyone who would listen. Did I talk to a lot of naysayers? I sure did. Lots of them. And to be honest, I almost gave up a bunch of times.
Then the tGSO community began the networking magic that it’s intended to, and over the summer and fall, two of my soon-to-be partners in crime randomly walked into tGSO for completely unrelated reasons. They listened to my dream of an art gallery at tGSO, and then they got excited, and they led me to more artists, who also got excited — and the rest is history. Right now, we are installing our inaugural art exhibition in the Art Gallery @ Bain — and y’all, these five artist entrepreneurs — first of all, let’s not even pretend — they are making me look really good. The truth is, though, I could never have done this without them.
And that’s the first point — all businesses need to network at some point or other to turn projects into reality. I am lucky enough to have that right at my fingertips at tGSO. The second point is this — don’t give up when you have a vision for your business. It’s at that moment when you’re ready to give up that the people you need often show up.
